SPOKANIMALS IN NEED!

Adoptable animals at SpokAnimal are evaluated by trained staff using the
ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™” (MYM)—a unique program that seeks to
increase adoption rates and decrease return rates in shelters across the country,
by assessing the “Canine-ality™” and “Puppy-ality™” of
adoptable dogs and puppies, as well as the “Feline-ality™” of adoptable cats,
and matching them with their perfect pet parents. Created by Dr. Emily Weiss,
the ASPCA®’s Meet Your Match™ is sponsored by Iams®

The spirits of those who leave us
lead to us the spirits of those who need us ...

"I'll never have another pet again - it hurts too bad to lose them." How sad to think that
the wonderful relationship you shared with your first pet wouldn't be worth enjoying again with another.
When you are ready to fill that void and feel the joy of loving another pet again, visit the shelter.
Someone is waiting for you.

Our Commitment to the Animals
Adopting a pet is a big commitment and we want you to make sure you are ready for it and have given the new pet lots of thought. Sometimes adjustment periods can be difficult and adapting to a new lifestyle, for both you and the pet, may take time. In some cases, trust and bonding happens slowly over several months, and can take as long as a year. Some of these pets come from situations where neglect and abuse have played a part and they are looking for only the best home where they will be loved, respected and cared for in only the best way.

Select the Right Pet For YOU!

Research & Realistic Expectations
Our adoption counselors will help guide you in selecting the right pet for your family and your lifestyle. Each animal's cage card will give you information on what previous owners (if owner-turn in) have told us about the animal. Our staff may also add information based on their experience while getting to know the animal in the Adoption Center.

We encourage you to do your homework about the breed you are interested in adopting. Knowing a breed’s characteristics, whether purebred or not, is an important step to finding the best match for you. We actively discourage impulse buying or adopting. Our pets deserve homes that are prepared for their arrival and owners who have realistic expectations about lifestyle changes and temperaments.

Have you taken into consideration your preferences in regard to your prospective pet's size, activity level, personality type, coat type, amount of shedding or grooming requirements, tolerance with children or other animals? Visit SelectSmart before you visit the shelter or, if you have found a potential pet, before you take him or her home. You may find that the breed that strikes your fancy might not be the right breed for you, or you may find many other possibilities you hadn't considered! Your choice will hopefully be part of your family for 10, 12 or more years ... Choose carefully!

Other Pets Available
We occasionally take in animals other than dogs and cats. Small pet animals, birds, reptiles and even farm animals occasionally find their way to our adoption center. Those animals are placed for adoption and will be featured in this section.

Put me on your waiting list!
Our adoption counselors review our "wish book" periodically when specific breeds come in, or you might specify a specific criteria such as "willing to adopt an older pet" or "willing to foster momma cat with kittens." Rescue groups are encouraged to update their contact information on a regular basis so we can be sure to be able to contact you when the need arises. When an animal goes unadopted from our adoption center, we do everything we can to give adoptable animals a second chance at a happy home by working closely with various area rescue groups. E-mail us at adopt@spokanimal.org or call us at 534-8133.

Pet overpopulation is a serious problem in our area,
as well as across the country.

If you are a supporter of responsible pet ownership and pet sterilization, you can do even more by referring people searching for a pet to any of the above organizations for information or adoptions. Your support is an integral part in what at times seems to be a never ending battle against the “disposable” attitudes so common today. Adopt your next pet and encourage those you know to do the same. For additional referrals on specific breed rescue groups, how to find a reputable breeder, or if you are looking for a particular pet, please call us at SpokAnimal C.A.R.E. We are more than happy to help you find the perfect friend and addition to your family.
